How this works
Instead of starting with a car's price and working out what it costs per month, this calculator works backward: starting from what you can actually afford to pay each month, it figures out the most expensive car that fits that budget.
The math is the same auto loan formula used to calculate monthly payments, just solved in reverse. Given your monthly payment budget, your loan's interest rate, and the loan term, the calculator determines the largest loan amount that would produce a monthly payment at or under your budget. Add your down payment on top of that loan amount, and you get the maximum vehicle price you can afford under those terms.
This approach tends to produce more realistic numbers than shopping by sticker price first and hoping the payment works out, since it forces the budget to be the fixed constraint from the start rather than an afterthought. It's the same logic personal finance advisors often recommend: decide what you can comfortably pay every month before you start looking at specific vehicles, so you're not tempted to stretch your budget for a car you fell in love with on the lot.
Keep in mind that "affordable" here means affordable within the loan itself — it doesn't account for insurance, which can vary substantially by vehicle type and your driving record, fuel costs, maintenance, or registration fees, all of which are real costs of car ownership on top of the loan payment. A common budgeting guideline is to keep your total car costs, payment plus insurance plus fuel and maintenance, under about 15-20% of your take-home pay, so it's worth leaving some room below your absolute maximum loan payment for those other expenses rather than maximizing the loan itself.
