Prize Wheel Average Payout Calculator
Find the average payout per spin for a prize wheel, promo, or raffle.
Only needed if spinning costs money, like a paid promo or raffle ticket.
How this works
Every prize wheel, raffle, or spin-to-win promo has a hidden number behind it: the average amount it pays out per spin, also called its expected value. This calculator finds that number by weighting each prize by how much of the wheel it actually occupies, since a $500 prize on a single sliver of the wheel matters a lot less to the average than a $5 prize spread across half the segments.
The math is straightforward: multiply each prize's value by its number of segments, add those up across every prize, then divide by the total number of segments on the wheel. That gives you the payout you'd expect on average over many spins, even though any single spin obviously lands on just one prize. It's the same expected-value logic used to price lottery tickets, casino games, and insurance products — the house (or promoter) doesn't need every outcome to be fair, just the average across enough spins to be sustainable.
If spinning costs money, entering that cost shows the net expected value: the average payout minus the cost to play. A positive number means the game pays out more than it costs on average, which is rare outside of promotional giveaways designed to build goodwill or collect leads. A negative number, common in raffles and paid games, means the average player loses money over time, even though some individual spinners walk away with a great prize.
For someone running a promo wheel, this number is a budgeting tool: multiply the average payout by your expected number of spins to estimate total prize cost before you commit to a prize structure. For someone deciding whether to spend money on a paid spin game, it's a quick gut check on whether the odds are actually in your favor, or just dressed up to feel that way.
