How this works

Net worth is one of the simplest and most useful numbers in personal finance: everything you own, minus everything you owe. It's a more complete financial snapshot than looking at income or savings account balances alone, since it accounts for debt and captures the value of things like retirement accounts, home equity, and vehicles alongside cash.

This calculator lets you list out your assets, anything of value you own: cash, checking and savings balances, retirement and investment accounts, your home's estimated value, vehicles, and anything else worth counting, one row at a time. Liabilities work the same way on the other side: credit card balances, student loans, an auto loan, a mortgage balance, and any other debt you owe. Add as many rows as you need for either list, and remove any you don't, since everyone's financial picture looks different.

The totals update as you type, so you can see immediately how adding a debt or an asset shifts your overall number. Net worth is simply total assets minus total liabilities, and it can be negative, which is common and not necessarily alarming, especially earlier in life when student loans or a new mortgage outweigh accumulated assets.

Net worth is most useful tracked over time rather than as a single snapshot. A single number tells you where you stand today; watching it change month to month or year to year tells you whether your overall financial position is improving, which matters more than the number itself. Recalculating this every few months, using rough but consistent estimates for harder-to-value assets like your home or car, gives you a simple trend line to watch.
